Legendary Cars voice actor and Nascar icon Humpy Wheeler dies aged 86

THE voice actor of a legendary character in Cars who was also a Nascar icon has died aged 86.

Humpy Wheeler was a former longtime president of the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

He was also an executive at Nascar, and helped revolutionize them over 33 years.

Wheeler also transformed the North Carolina track into a global racing hub.

His death was announced on Thursday afternoon in a statement.

It revealed he passed away peacefully of natural causes.

He was surrounded by his beloved family.

Wheeler was the voice behind Tex Dinoco in Cars.

He was a a Cadillac Coupe de Ville in the hit Pixar animated classic.

The character also appeared in its sequel, Cars 3.

Tributes poured in from across the racing world following the news.

That included from Nascar chairman and CEO Jim France.

“Humpy Wheeler was a visionary whose name became synonymous with promotion and innovation in our sport,” France said.

“During his decades leading Charlotte Motor Speedway, Humpy transformed the fan experience through his creativity, bold ideas and tireless passion.

“His efforts helped expand NASCAR’s national footprint, cement Charlotte as a must-visit racing and entertainment complex.

“It recently earned him the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s prestigious Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR.”

Wheeler was given the Nascar Landmark Award this year.

It honors those who have had a major impact on the sport.

He was a boxer in his younger days with a 40-2 amateur record.

Messages flooded in on social media following his death.

“The NASCAR family mourns the loss of H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler.”, said Nascar.

Another fan added: “Damn rip to a Legend of the sport!

“Did so much to bring more eyes and obviously helped building up NASCAR as a money maker.

“I thank him primarily on creating a great experience for fans and getting butts in seats.

“You will be missed Humpy!”
