Labour is wrecked and trust is rock bottom – Starmer must change course immediately

Trust us, Labour needs to change

AMIDST the wreckage of the Government’s most disastrous week in office, one thing above all is clear.

Sir Keir Starmer has a massive credibility problem. Voters don’t like what the PM is telling them and they don’t trust his promises.

A new Opinium poll shows fewer than a third of the public believes what he says.

Sir Keir has also slumped to an approval rating of minus 40, much worse than any other party leader.

After just over a year in office, it is a remarkable fall from grace for a Labour Government elected with a thumping 174-seat majority.

Following the Angela Rayner tax fiasco and the weekend’s emergency reshuffle, the PM has little option but to put his faith in the old Blair anthem — things can only get better.

But he must act urgently to stop the rot in three areas.

Firstly, new Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood must have every power she needs to stop the boats.

That includes finding a way to shelve objections raised under Article 8 of the discredited European Convention on Human Rights.

Secondly, the PM must abandon any new tax rises in November’s Budget and instead force through massive cuts to our obscene £300billion welfare bill.

Thirdly, he must execute an immediate U-turn on our ruinous Net Zero targets, which are predicted to cost an eyewatering £803billion by 2050.

This crazy commitment is unachievable, unrealistic and unaffordable, especially when we will need to invest vast sums in our future defence.

Nigel Farage slams ‘entitled’ Rayner & says her quitting will spark Labour civil war and early general election

The massive reset forced on him by Rayner’s sacking must be a wake-up call if he is to get a grip on this crisis.

But if he fails to implement these changes immediately he can forget about anything getting better.

Things will only get worse for him.

Put them in the dock

PROTESTERS arrested at Palestine Action demos must be brought to justice without delay.

More than 520 zealots were nicked on suspicion of supporting the proscribed terror group during protests nearly a month ago.

But just six have so far appeared in front of magistrates.

Scores of others charged after demos earlier this year are still awaiting court dates.

Around 300 were rounded up at yesterday’s London rally, some for violent assaults on police.

It is vital these lawbreakers are seen to be speedily brought before the courts.

Punishment is the best deterrent.
