THE Government admitted a major failure after ministers welcomed an alleged extremist to Britain — only to later discover his vile past tweets.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said senior civil servants — and successive Prime Ministers — had never been briefed on Alaa Abd el-Fattah’s social media posts calling for Zionists to be killed.
The Egyptian activist had been jailed for years in Cairo and his return to the UK was hailed by the PM as a top priority for his government.
But a row erupted after historic antisemitic posts resurfaced in which el-Fattah — given a UK passport in 2021 by the Tory Government due to his British-born mother — also said British people were “dogs and monkeys”.
Ms Cooper said officials handling the case were “unaware” of the material.
She ordered an urgent review into “serious information failures” in how the case was handled.
In a letter to Foreign Affairs Committee chair Dame Emily Thornberry, she said due-diligence procedures were “completely inadequate”.
This meant ministers made statements without the full facts.
Tories and Reform UK have demanded Labour strip el-Fattah of his British citizenship and deport him.
But Government sources say any bid to do so would almost certainly be challenged and overturned in court, at huge cost to taxpayers.
