James Norton’s famous dad chats to Anna Wintour at Wimbledon… do you think he’s getting the lowdown on why she left Vogue?

James Norton’s famous father Hugh was spotted chatting with former Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour at Wimbledon on Friday.

Anna, 75, stepped down from her iconic role at the fashion publication after an impressive 37-year tenure last month.

She appeared to be enjoying her time off in the Royal Box, surrounded by a star-studded crowd as the men’s semi-final matches played out.

Wearing a white floral dress, Anna was seated next to actor James, 39, and his father Hugh.

At one point, the trio were seen in deep conversation, sparking curiosity about what the former editor might have been sharing during the lively exchange.

While many know James as the actor who has starred in Happy Valley, you may not know his retired father has also been on the box.

Hugh has featured alongside his son in War and Peace, Grantchester, and also made a cameo appearance in BBC thriller McMafia.

The scene, which happened 20 minutes into the episode, saw Hugh dressed in a beige suit, turquoise shirt and a cravat and talking to two younger men outside a bar.

And whilst his appearance might have been fleeting, it was more exotic than previous TV cameos as it involved flying out to Croatia for filming last year.

James, who plays the lead character Alex Godman, revealed his father was thrilled to have been promoted from an unnamed extra to the character of a ‘sugar daddy’ on the call sheet.

Speaking to BBC Radio 2, James said he enjoys bringing his parents with him on shoots around the world, including Lithuania, where he filmed War and Peace.

On his dad’s appearances, he said: ‘He is in pretty much every show I do. My family have nothing to do with this industry.

‘They stand on the sidelines bemused and very supportive, but have no idea what’s going on.

‘My dad is recently retired from working as a lecturer at a college near Hull, and it’s a really great way for him and my mum to see the world.’

He continued: ‘So my dad comes and dresses up as these mad characters, and my mum sits of the sidelines and just laughs at him. And they love it.’

James added his father ‘fancied himself as a count’ for the adaptation about the French invasion of Russia in 1812, but ended up as a Cossack.

Hugh, a former lecturer at Hull School of Art and Design, has made a habit of securing cameo roles in his son’s TV work.

In 2014, he appeared in a smart tuxedo in Lady Chatterley’s Lover, while in 2016 he played a peasant in War and Peace, also for the BBC.

He and his wife Lavinia, also a teacher, shared a scene with their son in the third series of ITV’s Grantchester, appearing as extras at a ball.
