A TOWERING new 50-storey skyscraper with views over one of the UK’s biggest stadiums has been given the green light.
At a staggering 178m tall, the tower will be the second tallest building in the UK outside of the capital.
The high-rise development is set to be built in Cardiff, right next to Principality Stadium and Central Station.
Mock-up pictures of what the tower will look like feature striking views over the iconic stadium, the home of Welsh rugby.
The computer-generated images also reveal how the striking building will alter the Cardiff skyline, with one council planning officer comparing the vision to the Flat Iron building in New York.
As well as provisions for more than 500 apartments, co-working areas, a gym, and a spa, the tower will also feature elements of local design.
While the location was originally given planning permission for a 35-storey mixed-use building in 2023, Cardiff Council has now approved plans for a much more significant development.
Planning application documents reveal the looming tower is set to be built using a white Portland stone which “features on several of Cardiff’s significant civic buildings”.
In the bid, Project 5Plus Architects pledged that the edifice would also feature “subtle references to Welsh Celtic symbols”.
It said this was to pay homage to Wales‘ “rich visual heritage and identity”.
There are also plans for a separate two-storey pavilion restaurant and bar to be built next door.
Many councillors welcomed the development as a positive change for the city, but
If built to its maximum permitted height, the Cardiff building will come second only to the Deansgate Square South Tower in Manchester in the UK’s tallest buildings outside of London.
Wales’ current tallest building, the Meridian Tower in Swansea, stands at just 107m.
