In his thoughtless betrayal of British veterans Donald Trump crossed a line

Wrong, Mr Prez

DONALD Trump has been right this week to forcefully shake Nato out of its shocking complacency on defence.

But in his thoughtless betrayal of British veterans he crossed a line.

Suggesting British and other Nato troops had failed to properly support US forces on the frontline during the war on terror in Afghanistan was shameful.

Supporters of the President may claim he made a throwaway comment not intended to cause offence.

But it was a gross insult to the memories of the 457 British servicemen killed in that conflict.

Trump also forgets that 179 Brits died in Iraq, too.

They included Lance Corporal of Horse Matty Hull, killed by US Air Force pilots in a dreadful friendly fire incident.

As his pal and fellow soldier Chris Finney asks: why would the President disparage the memories of those who have fought and died?

Britain has always been America’s staunchest ally.

Donald Trump would do well never to forget those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our two countries.

Burn ’em

THE Andy Burnham circus is well and truly under way, with Labour factions fighting like rats in sacks.

The PM’s allies on Labour’s ruling NEC seem to think the smart move is to block the so-called King of the North from standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election.

Excuses being tried out are that it would be too expensive to run the contest to replace Burnham as mayor of Greater Manchester, or that it could open the door for Reform to take his place.

But rival camps point out that blocking Burnham risks making Sir Keir look weak.

Others say a “London stitch-up” of the candidature would be disastrous for the party.

Meanwhile, unions who like the latest Socialist incarnation of one-time Blairite Mr Burnham are spoiling for a massive fight if he’s not allowed to stand, claiming it would be a “democratic outrage”.

We remind Labour that — while they might enjoy all this plotting, posturing and whining — the rest of the country just wants our broken borders and cost of living crisis sorting out.

TV whammy

NEXT time you settle down for a pint in the local to watch a Premier League game on the big screen, spare a thought for the landlord.

The more a pub pays in business rates the higher the prices charged for TV subscriptions by Sky Sports and TNT.

That means Rachel Reeves’s plans to whack up rates leaves boozers facing a double whammy.

It’s yet another reason why a drastic rethink is needed — now.
