A MOTHER has confidently clapped back at trolls who have accused her of ‘wasting money’ by transforming her council house.
Crystal Jewell, a 32-year-old mum-of-two from Portsmouth, is currently on a mission to upgrade her council house and her most recent project involved building a DIY media wall in her living room.
The DIY enthusiast took to social media to give her followers a before, during and after look at the cheap and cheerful overhaul and also took a swipe at haters who criticised her for investing in her home.
As she cut wood to size and screwed it into her wall, she said: “Imagine getting trolled on the internet just for spending money on trying to do my council house up and adding value to the property.”
The content creator then asked: “Why do people think that just because you live in social housing that we deserve the bare minimum?”
Following this, the brunette beauty added: “Apparently I’m ‘wasting all of my money’ by trying to make my house nice.
“Maybe you’re right, but I’m probably gonna be here for many, many, many more years, so while I am here I am gonna put my heart and soul into this house and make it nice for me and my kids.”
Justifying why she wants to add style to her home, the mother, who recently made a DIY dressing table for only £21, continued: “Every single person deserves a nice home – sometimes things are just better left unsaid, especially when you don’t know what that person’s going through behind closed doors.
“But anyway, here’s me wasting even more money on my council house apparently as I’m attempting to build a media wall.”
Clearly unbothered by rude remarks, the DIY fan shared: “So to all you little negative Sally’s out there, this is the s**t I’m gonna carry on doing, because it makes me feel happy.”
Showing off her finished media wall which we think looks fabulous, Crystal acknowledged: “Don’t ever let anyone make you out to feel any less of a person – everyone deserves nice things in life.
“Unfortunately, times are hard for a lot of people and a lot of us are just doing what we can to get by – and if it’s these small things that make us happy, let us be.”
The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @crystal.jewell3, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly racked up 46,000 views, 2,895 likes and 234 comments.
Social media users were gobsmacked by Crystal’s DIY media wall and many eagerly raced to the comments to share their thoughts on her “amazing” project.
Rules on transforming your council house
According to Gov, the kind of improvements you can make to your council property depends on the type of tenancy you have.
Introductory tenants are usually limited to minor improvements like redecorating inside.
If you’re a secure tenant, you have the right to carry out improvements to your property. These include:
- installing a new bathroom or kitchen
- building an extension
- putting up a garden shed or greenhouse
- installing a new gas fire or fireplace
- cavity wall insulation
- redecorating the outside of a house
- fitting an aerial or satellite dish
You might need your council’s written permission for work you do. Contact your council if you’re not sure.
Not only this, but others told the savvy mum to ignore the “jealous” trolls who criticise her.
One person said: “Your house looks awesome, good job.”

Another added: “Most people moan about people that live in council houses! You’re making it look nice and people still moan! It’s your house and you’ve done a cracking job, all the best.”
A third commented: “I absolutely love home DIY videos, but yours are on another level – you truly inspire me.”
How to do your council house up on the cheap
- Take inspiration from pricier shops and head to B&M, Home Bargains for interior decorations.
- Head to YouTube for easy to follow tutorials on how to decorate rather than paying for professionals.
- For a quick glow-up for your floors or anywhere with tiles, opt for stick-on vinyl to save on costs.
- A lick of paint does wonders to make a room feel brand-new.
- Switch out kitchen cupboard knobs for modern ones instead of buying brand-new cupboards
Meanwhile, someone else posted: “People are so weird! It looks beautiful.”
At the same time, another DIY fan beamed: “It looks amazing.
“Negative comments are just from the jealous. You do you.”
