We are well into wedding guest season and if you don’t have time to find a new outfit, why not spruce up an old faithful dress or suit with this season’s most sought-after accessories instead? A good bag, some fabulous earrings or a statement headpiece can totally transform an outfit. But there are few new rules to follow when it comes to adorning yourself this summer.
Forget fascinators – chunky headbands are the new, less fusty, style to try. Get rid of your clutch bag too, and swap it for a spangly piece of arm candy with a strap instead.
Block heels may have been your go to for grassy events before now, but seventies inspired wedges are back to replace them this year. Need a belt? Make it one that could rival your necklace. That’s right, chain belts are the only way to cinch your waist now. And the last thing to remember: no pearls. Stand-out gold studs are the next best thing.
Read on to find out where to shop the new order of accessories.
Chunky headbands (not fascinators)
Raffia, ruching, crystal embellishments and textures are exactly what you should be looking for now. Match the colour to the rest of your outfit, or clash bold shades together. Make sure it’s thick rather than skinny, or it could risk looking too casual. As long as it doesn’t come with tendrils of feathers on it, you’re good to go.
Beaded bags (not clutches)
If you’re an avid scroller of TikTok or Instagram you might have already noticed the hype around beaded bags. Shoppers have specifically been trying to get their hands on the various jangly bright styles stocked at TK Maxx. These are sold out online, but I would recommend having a rummage in-store. Otherwise any one from the edit below will garner you compliments – and a great bag is always a good conversation starter at these events.
Wedges (not block heels)
Originally brought into the spotlight in the 1930s by the Italian fashion house, Ferragamo, wedges evolved from a practical orthopedic solution into a glamorous style statement in no time. During the seventies, the likes of supermodels Twiggy and Penelope Tree were firm fans of the trend. Now this boho shoe is having yet another revival, with Kate Middleton loving an espadrille pair. Reiss’ brown Kamia style is my particular favourite. But if you don’t have the budget, head straight to M&S or Schuh.
Jewellery belts (not leather)
A leather belt is fine for day to day wear, but the occasionwear alternative is a chain one. The Barcelona based brand Susmie’s sold out of their edit of beautiful gold belts in days, but thankfully they are now restocked. Free People has various options to choose from – and some with gemstones. Or try the shell belt from Daisy London for an ethereal twist to your look.
Statement gold earrings (not pearls)
Park your pearls. The new It-girl status symbol is a pair of bold gold studs or gemstone encrusted hoops instead. Think earrings that are worthy of the French Riviera. The YSSO are experts when it comes to gorgeous handcrafted, timeless investment pieces. Or head to Next for a blinder pair of molten hoops with chunky stones.
