A RARE 50p coin has sold for nearly £200 in fierce eBay bidding war – do you have it in your wallet?

Today, the very same coin is worth as much as £350.

The Kew Gardens coin is one of the rarest Royal Mint coins with only 210,000 ever made.

The design features a decorative leafy climber twining in and around the garden’s famous Pagoda.

The Royal Mint told The Swindon Advertiser: “Demand for the 50p denomination was low in 2009, accounting for the unusually low number of 50p coins struck that year.

“An immediate favourite, many went straight into private collections, making them even rarer than the low mintage suggests.”

Prior to being dethroned by the King Charles Atlantic Salmon 50p, the coin held the title of rarest coin in the UK between 2009 and 2023.

This also is not the first coin to celebrate Kew Gardens.

In 2019 another edition was released, however it is only the 2009 coin that considered to hold substantial value.

The collectors piece is so sought after that one sold for nearly £200 in Swindon recently.

The buyer sold a 2009 Kew Gardens 50p coin for a staggering £193.73 on eBay after a bidding war that attracted over 20 offers.

While another edition of the 50p, located in Surrey, sold on eBay for £354.50 last month.

This news comes after The Sun reported earlier this month, that a rare 50p sold for 5,000 times its face value.

Following a fierce eBay bidding war, the“Lines Across The Face” 2011 Olympic Aquatics piece sold for a massive £2,606.56.

The eBay listing had attracted 12 bids before it was sold to the highest bidder.

It was described by the seller as still in its original cellophane and in uncirculated “pristine” condition.

The extremely rare piece was one of 29 commemorative coins issued by The Royal Mint to celebrate the 2012 Olympics.

Each of the coins shows a different Olympic sport, and many are now considered extremely rare and of high value.

The Aquatics one is meant to show a swimmer diving headfirst into a pool.

But on 600 of the coins, lines were accidentally etched across the swimmer’s face.

You might think this would make the coins less valuable – but actually these “error coins” are extremely sought-after among collectors.

That’s because collectors want to have the rarest coins, and error coins like this are some of the most rare ones you can find.
