I was living in bed bug infected hostels with sex workers – now I’m turning a council house into my dream home

A WOMAN who was stuck in horrendous temporary housing for five years has revealed how she finally got a council house.

Tilly, from the UK, was thrilled to finally have a place to call home and was eager to turn it into the house she always wanted.

Taking to social media, Tilly gave viewers a tour of her new council house which she had already started decorating.

She said: “My first night in my first council flat.

“I waited 5 years, in and out of hostels across London. Some of the hostels had bed bugs, prostitution, sharing one toilet and shower with multiple people you don’t know.”

Now, Tilly had the flat since March of this year but had only just moved in as she got it ready to live in.

She added: “So I got my tenancy to my flat. I think it was in March and I’ve spent all this time since March doing it up. So let’s take a little tour.”

With Tilly not having her own space to call home for five years, she was eager to give it a personal touch.

She added a few cottagecore stickers to her kitchen windows as well as lots of pink accessories.

Tilly said she was able to get an oven secondhand and a new fridge for herself.

Carrying on the pink theme, Tilly had painted her bedroom and front room bright pink as well, and hoped to turn the boring white wall into a cow print design.

She had a large wet room bathroom, and while Tilly wanted a bath, she was happy with the size.

“It is what it is, We beggars can’t be choosers darling,” she added.

She also had a storage cupboard under the stairs which Tilly planned to use as a wardrobe.

Lastly, Tilly also had a gorgeous garden to make her own and had already started with her cream egg chair.

In the comments, she added: “When they gave me the keys, it was literally just a shell.

“The walls and the ceilings were yellow through years of smoking.

“I was really stressing because I didn’t know how I was gonna do it but just when I was about to crack, someone up above blessed me and I was able to get the floor done and get my little secondhand bits of furniture and my fridge.”

SOCIAL MEDIA REACTS

The clip has since gone viral on her TikTok account @tillyisapixie with over 52k views and 1,200 likes.

People were quick to comment, congratulating Tilly on her fresh start.

One person wrote: “Love the pink touches, you will make it a cosy home.”

Another commented: “Lovely place, you are going to make it amazing, well done.”

How to do your council house up on the cheap

  • Take inspiration from pricier shops and head to B&M, Home Bargains for interior decorations.
  • Head to YouTube for easy to follow tutorials on how to decorate rather than paying for professionals.
  • For a quick glow-up for your floors or anywhere with tiles, opt for stick-on vinyl to save on costs.
  • A lick of paint does wonders to make a room feel brand-new.
  • Switch out kitchen cupboard knobs for modern ones instead of buying brand-new cupboards.

“Looks lovely and cosy, hope you are happy in your new flat,” penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: “You’ve done amazingly. Well done stranger!”

“Congratulations on your new home. It’s lovely,” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “Congratulations on your lovely new home.”
