I was a stay-at-home mum for 10+ years & now regret it

A WOMAN has warned others not to be a stay-at-home mum as her husband leaves her with nothing.

Mum-of-two, Courtney, who is based in the US, took to social media to share her story and how relying on your partner to bring home the bacon can backfire.

In the clip, Courtney was driving along in her car as she said it was the ‘scariest’ thing to happen to her.

She revealed: “So, y’all wanna know the scariest thing and it’s happening to me now, is being a female, married, I’m 37, I have two kids, they’re five and seven, and I’ve been a stay-at-home mum for the past 10 plus years.

“I have no income, I have no money, I use my husband’s credit card, and I use my husband’s money.

“And two weeks ago, he told me that he wants to move forward with a divorce.”

ALWAYS GLAM

I’m a proud trad wife – I glam up every day to make him happy

She revealed that she had one card she used to pay for her day-to-day living, an American Express account.

While it was registered in her name, she admitted her husband paid it off.

Now, he had told her he was about to cut her off and to move all automatic payments to another card.

She said he had warned her she needed to use her own card from now on.

“What card?” she asked. “I don’t have a card, that is my card.

“Terrifying. I mean, I feel like a little girl who needs her mummy because I don’t know how to take care of myself.

“I don’t know what to do, it’s just terrifying.”

She captioned the post: “No one prepares you for how financially vulnerable stay-at-home mums are.”

The clip went viral on her TikTok account @cortneygetsfit with over 7.6 million views and 700k likes.

Many took to the comments, with some claiming they’d been warning women for years not to fall for the lifestyle.

One person wrote: “I feel like women have been screaming this from the rooftops for years but most sahm’s ignore it bc they don’t think it will happen to them.”

Courtney replied: “You’re so right, I’m one of them. No chance this was ever gonna happen until it did.”

What is a trad wife?

A trad wife (short for traditional wife) is a woman who chooses to take on an ultra traditional role in marriage, meaning she makes dinner and looks pretty whilst her husband goes to work.

The trend takes inspiration from the idea of a 1950s housewife.

Many ‘trad wives’ choose to dress in the style of clothing popular in this period (think floral dresses and frumpy cardigans).

Additionally, the values considered important to trad wives are similar to strict Christian values.

Trad wives believed they were not forced into this way of life, and that it was their purpose to be homemakers.

The trend, which has garnered attention on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, glamorises a time gone by with little acknowledgement of the economic challenges facing families and mothers today.

Another commented: “This is why being a SAHM is NOT recommended! Be independent ladies.”

“This should be a warning to all women, being a SAHM is a dangerous game to play…,” penned a third.

Meanwhile, a fourth said: “If this isn’t the perfect warning for women considering this life.”

“He owes you half, get a lawyer,” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “He owes you half, get a lawyer.”
