A MUM spotted something different when her six-year-old daughter was looking at a tablet.
Sienna was taken to the opticians on February 9 and was revealed to have swelling behind her optic nerve which soon left her blind.
Later that evening, a brain scan also revealed a brain tumour which led to Sienna being rushed to hospital.
Her mum, Emma, said: “Four weeks ago….she was just on her tablet, just a completely normal day, when I noticed she was holding it a bit closer than normal.
“It was a weekend so I thought, ‘oh, you know, she’s all right, I’ll book an appointment for her at the opticians for Monday.’
“At the appointment, they noticed some swelling behind her eyes around her optic nerve.
“Then from that point onwards it has been non stop back and forth to different hospitals for testing and it has all been very overwhelming.
“Sienna was found to have a brain tumour that is laying in her optic pathway. It is pressing up against her optic nerve, leaving her completely blind.”
Before finding out about the eye swelling and brain tumour, Sienna was excited to visit Disney World in Florida which she had planned for.
But news of swelling behind her optic nerve and brain tumour put a halt to the young girl’s dream.
When her family heard about her tumour, she was rushed to Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital.
The young girl from Aberdare, Wales, spent three weeks having treatment, including brain surgery.
However, the doctors said that the tumour could not be removed surgically, which has led to Sienna having to take an 18-month chemotherapy course.
Despite losing her eyesight, Sienna’s family are hopeful that she will regain her vision again.
The doctors said that Sienna’s tumour is a slow-growing, benign brain tumour.
This grade 1 glioma is often found in children and teenagers.
Emma said that although losing her eyesight was frightening, Sienna is still positive and remains happy.
She added: “It’s unbelievable really, that she is still so positive and so happy.
“She is still laughing and playing with her siblings and her friends.”
Sienna’s dad, Amy-Leigh, said: “We’ve had so much support from the hospital, the girl’s schools and our family and friends. It’s scary but we are being strong for her.
“Even at the hospital, the nurses couldn’t believe how happy and playful she was, from day one.
“Despite everything she has gone through, the surgeries, she’s just a happy, happy little girl.”
After missing out on her trip to Disney World, the family are hoping Sienna can get back on track to her Florida trip.
But with her travel insurance voided following her diagnosis, the parents are looking to raise £6,000 to pay for the only policy that would get her to her dream spot.
They have launched a GoFundMe page for people to donate and help cover the insurance.
They said that any remaining funds would go to Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House.
