‘I can’t get my head around it’

MANCHESTER UNITED coach Michael Carrick fumed at the VAR process in their 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.

United were aggrieved that Amad was denied a penalty by referee Stuart Attwell at 1-0, 25 seconds before Ryan Christie equalised in the 67th minute.

The Premier League Match Centre said it “was deemed the contact was not sufficient for a foul”.

After United made it 2-1, Harry Maguire was sent off for bringing down Evanilson inside the area.

The Match Centre explained that Maguire committed “a holding offence with no attempt to challenge for the ball”.

Junior Kroupi converted from 12 yards in the 81st minute to secure a point for the Cherries against 10-man United.

United broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after Alex Jimenez’s blatant tug on Matheus Cunha allowed Bruno Fernandes to score.

But Carrick said United should have had two penalties.

“My first (thought) is he definitely got one of them wrong, because he’s given one penalty for the same thing that he’s not given as a two-armed grab.

“So the Matheus one, he gives, the second one on Amad he doesn’t. Which is, I think, almost identical, really.

“Two hands on someone in the box, and they go over and they’re in control of the ball.

“For me, it’s two penalties. But it’d be interesting to see which one he acknowledges is wrong, whether the one we got or the one that we didn’t get.

“To give one and not give the other, I can’t get my head around it, I think it’s crazy.

“And it’s a huge moment. You don’t give it, they go down to the other end and score.

“And then it needs to be a bigger penalty to overturn just because they scored when actually it’s a penalty and it should be a penalty if you’ve already given one.

“So a bit baffling, really, to make sense of that. I haven’t spoken to (the ref). Once it’s done, it’s done, you know?

“I think you can have all the conversations in the world about, could it have been this, could it have been that?

“I just think surely that’s for VAR. If they’ve already just given they’ve one and agreed that that was a penalty.

“Surely the next one should be a straightforward one.

“As I say, one of them has got to be right, or they’re wrong or whatever.

“But whether [the officials] apologise or don’t, it’s done now.

United captain Fernandes backed Carrick: “I think we could have gone 2-0 up.

“And then we ended up conceding a goal, not getting a penalty.

“And then we get a penalty against, where more or less it’s the same situation as Amad.

“One is rewarded as a penalty, the other one is not.

“I know it’s difficult for the referee to give two penalties in the same game for the same team but what I don’t understand is why VAR doesn’t get involved in that situation.

“Either one is a penalty and the other one too or none of them is a penalty.”
