SIR ANDY MURRAY choked up while discussing Sir Chris Hoy’s cancer diagnosis.
Hoy, 49, was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in September 2023 before going public the following summer.
The seven-time Olympic medallist revealed last October that his condition was terminal.
In a new BBC documentary, entitled Sir Chris Hoy: Cancer, Courage & Me, some of the cycling icon’s fellow London 2012 legends, including Murray, spoke about the Edinburgh man’s condition.
Asked about the moment he first heard about Hoy’s diagnosis, Murray said: “At the Olympics he interviewed me.
“I messaged him after and said, ‘How are you doing?’ He was like, ‘It’s been a really tough year. But I’m doing this charity bike ride about changing perceptions around stage four cancer’.
“I said to my wife, ‘I think he has stage four cancer, based on the message’.
“I think it was literally, maybe the next day or two days later that he announced it publicly for the first time.
“And I was really upset by it.”
At this point, the visibly emotional Scot apologised as he choked up.
Murray then continued: “He’s just an all-round great person. He’s obviously got this terrible diagnosis but now it’s inspiring to see how he’s going about it.
“He’s still in unreal shape. Incredible that he’s still stayed so motivated and driven. He’s decided to use it as a way of making other people’s lives better.
“It puts essentially the little problems that you have at home on a daily basis in perspective.”
The Beeb also spoke to husband and wife cycling legends Laura and Jason Kenny.
Laura, 33, began: “Jason rang me… I can’t even talk.”
At this point, both Laura and Jason attempted to smile as they choked back tears.
‘A SUPERHERO’
Five-time Olympic gold medallist Laura continued: “I don’t know, you’re just shocked aren’t you.
“Because Chris is a superhero in my mind and a friend of ours.”
Jason, 37, added: “He’ll keep enjoying life and he’ll just remain a positive beacon for everyone.”
The documentary is set to air at 9pm on Thursday on BBC One.
Hoy and his wife Sarra have two children together; a son named Callum David Robert Hoy, born in 2014, and a daughter named Chloe Rose Carol, born in 2017.
Speaking to the BBC, Lady Sarra devastatingly revealed the kids asked “was it because I was naughty?” when told about their dad’s diagnosis.
Sarra then explained: “They were scared, they had heard about cancer.”
