‘I always see rugby coaches do this’ – PSG boss Luis Enrique adopts tactic from different sport in game v Lens

LUIS ENRIQUE is borrowing a tactic from RUGBY in a bid to improve his already dominant Paris Saint-Germain team.

Enrique, 55, ditched the touchline to get a new view of his superstar XI during their 2-0 victory over Lens on Sunday.

The PSG boss spent the first half of the game watching from the press box, before heading back down to the technical area for the second spell.

And Enrique explained after the game that he chose to do so after seeing rugby coaches do the same thing.

He told reporters: “For some time now, I’ve been watching rugby coaches who analyse matches from a very different perspective.

“I like the possibility of seeking that improvement. I wanted to follow the first half from the stands and it’s magnificent. It’s different. I can control everything.”

Asked if he plans on using the technique going forward, Enrique added: “It’s an interesting option that I’m going to use in the future.

“After that, you can perfectly give the halftime talk because you’ve seen perfectly who played well on the field. We have a lot of direct information.”

The tactic clearly worked as PSG registered six more shots in the second half compared to the first, while they also conceded no big chances in the second spell compared to the two they faced in the opening 45 minutes.

Bradley Barcola scored either side of the half-time break as PSG continued their perfect start to the Ligue 1 campaign and maintained their spot on top of the tree.

Whether Enrique will deploy the same tactic on Wednesday night when the Parisians take on Atalanta in their Champions League opener is yet to be seen.

But the Spanish manager seems to have landed on a new way to view the game that will give his already dominant side another advantage over their opponents.

Enrique had his arm in a sling while watching on from the sidelines and the press box following a horror cycling incident earlier this month.

The manager had to undergo emergency surgery after being rushed to hospital with a fractured collarbone after coming off his bike during the accident.
