Huge ITV drama Unforgotten has been dealt a fresh blow after its writer Chris Lang has admitted he wishes to step down after the upcoming series.
The crime drama follows detectives as they delve into cold cases however the latest season received criticism from viewers who blasted ITV for ‘ruining’ it with ‘woke and nonsensical’ storylines.
And now it seems the future of the show has been called into question with Chris’ involvement uncertain.
Speaking in an interview with the Royal Television Society he said: ‘I’ll probably hand on the baton after this series. I’ll still be involved, but I’ve written 42 episodes and don’t want to repeat myself,’ The Sun reported.
The multi-award winning screenwriter added: ‘I wouldn’t write it if I didn’t have something to say about the state of the nation.
‘Because Unforgotten has an inherent and robust structure, that allows me space to hold up a mirror to British society — it’s a Trojan horse show.’

MailOnline have contacted ITV representatives for comment.
Back in February ITV confirmed Unforgotten would be recommissioned for a seventh series, despite some fans fearing it would be axed.
The sixth series was a great streaming success, with the first episode attracting 7.4million viewers after 14 days.
However despite tuning in viewers weren’t happy as they took to social media to accuse the show of going ‘full on woke’.
The sixth series saw DCI Jessica ‘Jessie’ James (Sinéad Keenan) and DI Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) work on Gerry Cooper’s unsolved murder and assess suspects.
Mel and Asif raised suspicions with the detectives after they claim they don’t recall Gerry. While Marty also caused concern when he asked for a break to think about his story.
Many TV watchers took to social media to share their opinions on the crime drama.
One viewer posted on X: ‘I reckon one more series and this show will get mothballed or even fully axed.

It first aired in 2015 and has since seen over 30 episodes grip fans as the cases unfold
‘Unfortunately this one is a real box-ticking leftie crowd-pleaser. Such a shame that mass popularity television invariably descends into safe and bland dross. Sanj and Sinead wasted.’
‘Sorry guys but you have ruined #Unforgotten as it’s now complete woke nonsense!’;
‘What the hell has happened to #Unforgotten it’s gone full on woke!! Switched off @ITV.’;
‘#Unforgotten utterly ruined. Woke clap trap. Such a shame.’
Another watcher agreed with the ‘woke’ claims but expressed they they were ‘still enjoying’ the show.
They penned: ‘Up to episode 4 of #Unforgotten Look forward to seeing how all the pieces of the puzzle will fit together. Some great acting.
‘Is it too woke? Probably – but I am still enjoying it as, in a few years time when we see repeats, we will consider it an astute look at UK in 2025.’
While someone else said: ‘Brilliant series! Recommend Unforgotten … near tears at the end #unforgotten #itv.’
