There is heavy congestion on the A46 in both directions in Gloucestershire and Somerset, and the M4 in both directions near junction 18 for Bath and Stroud.
It is understood that the horror smash involved a motorbike and a car, emergency services are on the scene.
It remains unclear if anyone was seriously injured in the incident.
Diversions were put in place in the wake of the collision, but these have led to jams on local routes across Gloucestershire and Somerset.
Rush hour commuters are being urged to check their route before travelling.
