How Was a Middle East Sky News Reporter Supposed to Know What All Those Flags Meant? – HotAir

Alex Crawford, Order of the British Empire (OBE, or as we say in the Marine Corps, ‘Overcome by Events‘) has had herself quite a distinguished journalism career, judging by her Sky News biography. Full of all sorts of death-defying adventures, many of them in the Middle East.

Alex travels the world covering major stories, often from war zones.

A founding journalist at Sky, she has been based in Delhi, Johannesburg, and the UAE.

Her reporting has seen her detained, abducted, interrogated, and under fire from bullets, tear gas, IEDs, and shelling. She was the first to independently gather first-hand evidence of the Rohingya ethnic cleansing, now before the ICC.

Alex also broadcast live from Tripoli’s Green Square as rebels took Libya’s capital.

She is a five-time RTS Journalist of the Year, has won four BAFTAs, five international Emmys, the James Cameron Award for outstanding journalism and moral integrity, and the Charles Wheeler Award for contribution to broadcast journalism.

Alex is Patron of the NCTJ and holds honorary doctorates from UAL and Solent University for services to journalism.

Honorary doctorates, huh? I’m impressed, even though I myself boast 18 or so credits from fine Community Colleges on both coasts. I’m no slouch in the journalistic education department, and for sure, no one gave me any of those.

Nevertheless, the old girl does have me beat in the ‘feet on the deck’ experience in the current area of hostilities, which is what makes her report here so…off-putting?

Confusing?

A flat-out lie?

Here she is at a funeral for three ‘journalists’ killed in an Israeli airstrike over the weekend in Lebanon.

Two were supposedly ‘journalists’ for two Hezbollah-backed media outlets, along with a cameraman who happened to be the female’s brother.

…A Lebanese military source told AFP earlier on Saturday that Ali Shoeib of Hezbollah’s Al Manar channel and Fatima Ftouni of Al Mayadeen, seen as close to the Iran-backed movement, were killed in Jezzine, alongside Ftouni’s brother, a cameraman.

Naturally, there’s been a huge stink over Israeli claims justifying the strike on their vehicle.

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) claims that the Al Manar reporter, Ali Shoeib, has long been a member of the Radwan intelligence arm of Hezbollah, and has been using his press vest access to report on positions and movements of Israeli troops in order to facilitate strikes against them.

The United States government has documented so many ties between Al Manar and the Hezbollah terrorists that the network earned itself its own terrorist organization designation from the Treasury Department all the way back in 2006. The Treasury release at the time notes that the network is especially adept at employing Hezbollah members and then using them ‘for pre-operational surveillance under the cover’ of Al Manar employment.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury today designated pursuant to Executive Order 13224 al Manar, a satellite television operation owned or controlled by the Iran-funded Hizballah terrorist network.  Additionally designated today were al Nour Radio and the Lebanese Media Group, the parent company to both al Manar and al Nour Radio.

Al Manar and al Nour

Al Manar and al Nour are the media arms of the Hizballah terrorist network and have facilitated Hizballah’s activities.

Any entity maintained by a terrorist group whether masquerading as a charity, a business, or a media outlet is as culpable as the terrorist group itself, said Stuart Levey, Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence.

Al Manar has employed multiple Hizballah members.  One al Manar employee engaged in pre-operational surveillance for Hizballah operations under cover of employment by al Manar.

Al Manar and al Nour have supported fundraising and recruitment efforts by Hizballah.  Al Manar raised funds for Hizballah through advertisements broadcast on the network and an accompanying website that requested donations for the terrorist organization.  As recently as late 2005, Hizballah-affiliated charities aired commercials on al Manar, providing contact information and bank account numbers for donations.  Moreover, Hizballah Secretary General Nasrallah publicized an invitation for all Lebanese citizens to volunteer for Hizballah military training on al Manar and al Nour.

In addition to supporting Hizballah, al Manar has also provided support to other designated Palestinian terrorist organizations, including the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, notably transferring tens of thousands of dollars for a PIJ-controlled charity.  PIJ is listed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist and a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S. Government, and is also named on the European Union’s list of terrorist entities.

Al Manar provides the access of the journalist’s vest.

Does that mean the specific charges the Israelis laid against the now unalived Ali Shoeib were true?

…Shoeib was one of Al Manar’s most prominent war correspondents, having covered Israeli attacks on Lebanon for decades.

In a statement, the Israeli military said it had targeted Shoeib, accusing him of being a “terrorist in the intelligence unit of Hezbollah’s Radwan Force”.

Shoeib, it said, “operated within the Hezbollah terrorist organisation under the guise of a journalist for the Al Manar network, while operating systematically to expose the locations of IDF soldiers operating in southern Lebanon and along the border”.

The Israelis say they are, and, naturally, the other side and the Western media are outraged and denying everything.

As far as the woman who was killed, her network was targeted two years ago by the Israeli government for collusion with the terrorists at Hezbollah.

The government on Sunday approved a proposal to block Lebanon’s Hezbollah-affiliated Al Mayadeen news channel, and Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi signed an order to confiscate the network’s equipment and block its websites.

…The decision to again block the network — apparently both its transmissions and its work in Israel — came after “the reappearance of terrorist representatives posing as journalists about two weeks ago,” a spokesman for Karhi said in a statement referring to an Al Mayadeen reporter’s broadcast from Majdal Shams last month, a day after a rocket fired by Hezbollah killed 12 children on a soccer field in the Druze town in the Golan Heights.

In her broadcast, Al Mayadeen’s Hanaa Mahameed falsely claimed that the children were hit by an Israeli strike, prompting Karhi to state that the military was “invited to take [Mahameed] and throw her across the border. Letting a Hezbollah reporter broadcast from the scene of the massacre Hezbollah committed is absurd on every level.”

And in the last Xweet before her death, Fatima Fatouni seemed to post something along the very lines the ‘journalists’ were being accused of – being advance undercover troops for Hezbollah strikes to come.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

We will gradually ensnare them from whence they know no

So this was where events stood until Alex Crawford made her way to make her case that the Israelis slaughtered and maligned three journalists who were just doing their jobs.

The Israelis provided no evidence whatsoever that, as Crawford implies, these martyrs had anything to do with Hezbollah.

As she completely ignores the fifty Hezbollah flags flying in the rain during the funeral she’s narrating with such passion.

Well, and the Hezbollah draped coffin of the fellow the Israelis said was a Hezbollah operative.

Right there. That yellow flag with the gun shrouding the box behind her.

Alex can’t see a thing.

About that evidence thing, too. The BBC had been ignoring years of evidence about this guy.

…While all four of those BBC journalists promoted the claim that “the IDF provided no evidence” – (and even though in the past the BBC has chosen to ignore such evidence when presented), they displayed remarkably little journalistic curiosity regarding the record of Ali Shoeib. As reported by the Times of Israel:

“For years Shoeib had been broadcasting from the border with Israel, at times taunting Israeli troops.

In January 2024, Shoeib published a post on X threatening Eitan Davidi, the leader of the Israeli border community of Margaliot. The post included footage showing a Hezbollah operative aiming a gun at Davidi’s home from across the border.”

Shoeib’s threats against Eitan Davidi were reported at the time and his practice of informing Hizballah of the locations of IDF troops has also long been documented. Shoeib’s name has appeared in court cases in Israel relating to the transfer of information to Hizballah. Had the BBC journalists looked, they might also have found the photographs of Shoeib with figures such as Qassem Soleimani and a Radwan Force commander.

Basic research would also have led to BBC journalists being aware of Fatima Ftouni’s support for the Assad regime’s atrocities, her glorification of Hassan Nasrallah and participation in a Hizballah social media campaign as well as her cheering of the October 7th Hamas massacre.

Alex must have missed it like she missed the flags.

Or the ‘resistance fighters’ placards being held as ‘journalists’ are interned in a burial ground for wasted terrorists.

Maybe the guy was just really popular at the office, and everyone decided to turn out for him on a crappy day.

They can’t help it if they’re all Hezbollah, and that’s all they had to wear to the funeral.

Nice of her not to notice and just do the propaganda journalisming she seems to be so good at.
