How some of Britain’s favourite chocolates contain HALF as much cocoa as other brands as costs soar

CHOCOLATE fans may be surprised to discover that some of their favourites contain HALF as much cocoa as other brands.

Britain’s market leader Cadbury Dairy Milk has 20 per cent of the powder, which is far less than rivals Nestle, Galaxy and Terry’s.

The Food Standards Agency deems milk chocolate to be confectionary with at least 25 per cent cocoa and 14 per cent milk solids.

If it has at least 20 per cent milk content, the cocoa can be lower, in which case it is called “family milk chocolate” or “chocolate with a high milk content”.

Every other major milk chocolate on the UK market has a higher percentage of cocoa than Cadbury Dairy Milk, which sells more than 350million bars a year.

Hotel Chocolat Milk Chocolate Slab has 40 per cent, Lindt Lindor Milk bar has 31 per cent and Nestle Crunch bar has 29 per cent.

The market leader is also at the bottom of the table when compared to cheaper alternatives, including Aldi’s Dairyfine dark chocolate bar, which has 55 per cent cocoa.

Chocolate expert Jennifer Earle told The Sun on Sunday: “The price of cocoa is three to four times more expensive than it was two years ago.

“Generally, confectionary contains far too little cocoa to be considered proper chocolate by my standards. It is classed as chocolate because legal requirements in the UK are so low.”

A spokesman for Cadbury said: “Cadbury Dairy Milk is the UK’s bestselling milk chocolate brand and its creamy, chocolatey taste has meant its popularity has endured since it was first created in 1905.”
