‘Horrendous’ moment female Champions League star is rushed to hospital with traumatic brain injury after collision

A FEMALE Champions League star was rushed to hospital after suffering a traumatic brain injury.

Atletico Madrid defender Andrea Medina was knocked out after a horror collision in the match against Juventus.

Medina, 21, was caught by the knee of Juventus star Barbara Bonansea while making a defensive tackle in the 73rd minute.

She remained on the turf after the challenge as the officials and players ran to her aid.

Medical staff came running onto the pitch to assist Medina as there was a stoppage in play.

After six minutes of treatment, Medina was carried off on a stretcher and rushed to hospital.

Broadcaster Jacqui Oatley was commentating at the Centro Deportivo Alcala de Henares when Medina went down.

She described the moment as “horrendous” as she wished the defender well.

She wrote: “This is horrendous.

“We’ve just commentated on Atletico Madrid’s UWCL game v Juventus for Disney+ and young Spanish left back Andrea Medina suddenly went down – she received urgent lengthy treatment before being carried off.

“We wish her all the very best and hope she’s OK.”

Atletico confirmed that she suffered a “traumatic brain injury” in the collision.

A club statement read: “Andrea Medina was replaced after suffering a traumatic brain injury.

“The footballer is doing well but has been transferred to a hospital centre to undergo additional tests.”

Atletico lost 2-1 to the Italian outfit as Amaiur Sarriegi’s opening goal was cancelled out by Emma Stølen Godø before Bonansea’s winner.

Medina’s team-mate Carmen Menayo was asked about her situation after full-time.

She was able to give a positive update.

She said: “I think she’s doing well, she’s in the hospital, and she has to undergo tests but I think she’s doing fine”
