A HOMEOWNER has shared an urgent warning and begged Brits to ‘be careful with electric blankets.”
So if you love cosying up to your electric blanket when you go to sleep in winter, you’ll need to pay attention.
Just 24 hours ago, a content creator named Meg took to social media to share her serious warning.
The young woman, who lives with her partner Sam and often posts home renovation content online, explained that last year, she experienced a house fire that saw her entire home covered in soot.
Sharing footage of the heartbreaking aftermath of the fire, Meg acknowledged that she was left “heartbroken” by the damage.
The homeowner claimed that the fire was started by an electric blanket that “somehow sparked while switched off.”

The winter must-have, which was plugged in at the time, caused “extensive repairs.”
As a result of the damage, Meg and Sam’s home remained “uninhabitable for six months.”
Alongside images of soot-covered walls and damaged belongings, Meg wrote: “At some point in your life you will be taught to unplug your electric blankets when they’re not in use.”
Following this, she advised: “It is VERY important that you do that.”
As well as this, Meg stressed that the destruction had taken almost 12 months to fix, as she continued: “Almost one year later. Be careful with your electrical blankets.”
Meg recognised that the fire was “mostly maintained” to the lounge which needed new flooring, as well as the ceiling and window replaced.
However, the rest of the property was “severely smoke damaged” and not only was her bathroom left totally grey, but the bedroom was equally as destroyed.
Reflecting on the horrific experience, Meg explained that the fire felt “like a nightmare” and was an “awful end to 2024.”

Meg’s TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @lifeofmegandsam, has clearly left many open-mouthed as it has quickly gone viral and racked up 2.9 million views.
Social media users were stunned by the jaw-dropping fire damage and were thankful for Meg’s important warning.

TO avoid a devastating fire in your home, there are some checks you should be conducting every night, according to Gov.uk.
- Close inside doors at night to stop a fire from spreading
- Turn off and unplug electrical appliances unless they are designed to be left on – like your freezer.
- Check your cooker is turned off
- Don’t run appliances such as washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers overnight
- Turn heaters off and put up fireguards
- Put candles and cigarettes out properly
- Make sure exits are kept clear
- Keep door and window keys where everyone can find them
