History of St Totteringham’s Day as record broken in 2025-26 after Arsenal & Tottenham play out very different seasons

WITH Tottenham’s defeat to Fulham on Sunday, St Totteringham’s Day has arrived for Arsenal fans once again.

March 1 is now the earliest date in Premier League history that St Totteringham’s Day has been celebrated, with Igor Tudor’s plummeting Spurs sitting a huge 32 points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Arsenal have a rich history with St Totteringham’s Day

The earliest St Totteringham’s Day was previously celebrated on March 9, in 2008, with nine games left to play. Arsenal finished third while Spurs languished in 11th.

The Gunners are now 35 points clear of their neighbours after defeating Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

Even if Tottenham had won, Arsenal would have secured the earliest record with a win of their own.

The biggest-ever gap between Arsenal and Tottenham in a Premier League season was 45 points during the former’s ‘Invincibles’ run in 2003-04.

Ironically, Arsenal are looking for their first league since that season today, but it’s far from a done deal with Manchester City breathing down their necks.

Conversely, the most points Spurs have ever finished above Arsenal is 14 in 2017-18, which was the season before they went on to reach the Champions League final under Mauricio Pochettino.

It’s a rivalry that Arsenal have dominated for the most part.

The Gunners have been above Spurs in the league on 69 occasions. Spurs have finished above Arsenal 36 times by comparison.

The phrase, St Totteringham’s Day, was introduced in the early 2000s and became a real marker among fans in the 2010s, when Arsenal achieved the feat 21 times in a row.

While Tottenham flipped the script by finishing ahead of Arsenal in six straight seasons after that, Mikel Arteta has brought the good times back to the Emirates and they are now currently on a run of four.

In the Premier League era, Arsenal have enjoyed the majority of early St Totteringham’s Day victories and wide points margins by the end of the season.
