Hijacked plane crashes into Los Angeles airport building

A small plane has crashed into a building at a Los Angeles area airport after it was stolen from a flight school, it has emerged. 

A thief allegedly broke into Van Nuys Airport around 4am and hijacked a single-engine Cessna, before crashing it into a building, KNBC reported.

Video of the crash site showed how the plane took a went nose first into the building, resulting in a hole being left in the side of the hangar. 

Law enforcement officials have not yet released details about how the theft occurred, but did note the plane never made it off the ground. 

A suspect has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft of aircraft, according to Los Angeles police.

Both the LAPD and FBI responded to the scene. It is unclear if authorities are searching for any additional suspects.

Authorities also have not confirmed if anyone was injured during the incident.

The incident occurred at a flight training facility at Van Nuys Airport, according to KTLA.

Investigators suspect the plane struck the building while taxiing on the ground. 

It has since been removed from the hangar and taken inside the flight school.

Little is known about the suspect, including whether or not the individual was a student at the flight academy. 

The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the theft.

A spokesperson told the news outlet that the probe is in the preliminary stage and information is subject to change. 

Van Nuys Airport is owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports, the same company that owns and operates Los Angeles International.

Located in the San Fernando Valley, Van Nuys ranks as one of the busiest airports in the world, according to city officials.

It is a popular hub for flight training and private jets, with celebrities including Kylie Jenner having been known to use the site. 

The airport hosts more than 200 businesses, including operators that provide aircraft fueling, storage, and charter services.

Due to its proximity to Hollywood, the airport is a popular filming location for films and television shows.

Van Nuys also supports supports various operations for local news, medical and fire departments.
