A 37-year-old man has since been charged with her murder and is in custody, South Wales Police said.

Emergency services raced to South Morgan Place at 7.37am on Thursday to reports of a seriously injured woman.

But despite the best efforts of paramedics, Niwunhellage Dona Nirodha Kalapni Niwunhella, who was known as Nirodha, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Nirodha’s family, who are being supported by specialist officers, released a touching tribute on Friday.

“We remember Nirodha as a cherished daughter, family member and dear friend to many,” it read.

“Nirodha will be forever remembered with peace, love and gratitude.

“She touched many lives with her kindness and warmth and her memory will continue to inspire us. Though her life ended too soon, the love she shared will always remain with us.

“Rest in peace angel.”

South Wales Police said that Thisara Weragalage, 37, from Pentwyn, has now been charged with Nirodha’s murder.

The man has been remanded into custody and will appear at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on Saturday.

The force had previously said that a 37-year-old man, who was known to Nirodha, was arrested in connection with her death on a nearby road shortly after she was found.

Senior Investigating officer DCI Matthew Davies said on Friday: “My heartfelt condolences are with Nirodha’s family, friends, and loved ones as they come to terms with this tragic loss.

“We have specially trained officers supporting her loved ones at this time and ask that their privacy is respected.

“I continue to urge anyone with information who is yet to speak to officers to come forward and support our investigation.”

One woman living nearby told WalesOnline that she heard a scream at around 7.30am that morning.

She said she thought it was children before the police arrived at the scene.

South Wales Police conducted door-to-door enquiries on Thursday and put a large cordon in place after Nirodha was found.

A forensic tent could also be seen outside a block of flats.

Detectives are now urging for any witnesses or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward.

They would particularly like to hear from anyone with information about a grey Ford Fiesta in or near South Morgan Place between the hours of 7.30am and 8.30am.

This includes Seawall Road, including Wellington Street, Clare Road, Penarth Road and East Tyndall Street.
