MARRIED At First Sight star Sarah broke down in tears tonight as she opened up about her painful family heartbreak.
The bride from Aberdeen revealed she tragically lost her mum when she was just 22 after a long battle with alcoholism.
She said to the camera: “My dad is walking me down the aisle because he is my absolute rock, my world.
“I lost my mum when I was 22, she passed away.”
Sarah continued “My mum was my hero but around the age of 12, I noticed she had a problem with alcohol.
“I would come home from school and find her intoxicated on the couch, so I had to take on a carer role essentially at a really young age.”
In an emotional VT clip, Sarah and her father looked through photo albums of pictures of her late mum
Sarah emotionally admitted she often felt “nervous” to come home from school when she was younger.
She continued: “By the time I was 22, she was admitted to hospital for the final time.”
Breaking down in tears, Sarah said: “And she passed away a few days later.”
“And then we went back to see her and she was so at peace and that’s the comfort that I take from it,” as she wiped tears from her face.
“I miss her all the time.”
At the hen party, Sarah admitted she’s gone through most of her adult life not having her mum.
She said to the other brides: “I do find it quite hard, especially going into life events and not having her there.
“One of those things, it’s never really the same but you just get on with it.”
Sarah then began to cry as it dawned on her that her mum would not being there on her wedding day.
But she added: “I know she would be absolutely buzzing for this.
“She’s be there going ‘go on Saz, you’ve got this girl’, she’s going to be so proud of me.”
They were then seen raising a glass to her mum Julie.
Sarah is hoping the experts have matched her with her dream man.
While Sarah believes that there are no eligible bachelors in her hometown and – with all of her friends settling down – she is determined to find The One.
Sarah said she’s often gone for bad boys who look like they’ve “come out of prison” and wants a man with tattoos.
But is now looking for “the nicest guy in the world” and the lucky man will have to earn the approval of her dad.
Mafs couples that have stood the test of time
Loved-up Tayah Victoria and Adam Aveling of series six fame had the first Mafs baby.
The pair couldn’t keep their hands off each other on the programme and quickly found their feet in the outside world, moving into Adam’s Doncaster home.
Just 18 months after meeting, the couple welcomed their daughter Beau.
Season five couple Michelle Walder and Owen Jenkins also managed to make their marriage work away from the cameras and had their first child in December.
Teacher Michelle, 29, has no regrets about taking part in the experiment. She told us: “I just feel very lucky and thankful that it has worked out – and excited for everything to come.”
Michelle and Owen were both sick of dating apps when they applied in 2019.
Owen recalled: “I had been out for some drinks with a friend after work.
“While he was out for a cigarette I was scrolling on Instagram waiting for him to come back in.
“The MAFS advert was the last thing I saw, and I joked, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if I signed up?’
“A few beers later when I was back at home I sent in the application, and the rest is history.”
Another couple to make Mafs UK history is Zoe Clifton and Jenna Robinson.
Despite a slight rocky start, where they clashed over Jenna’s vegan lifestyle, the show’s first same sex pairing are still going strong.
They even have a successful podcast together called Life With a Pod.
Jenna shed light on being involved in the show earlier this year when she told us: “We’re not legally married, and I never felt like we were. I definitely feel the process makes you take the relationship a lot more seriously and having the help of the experts… if you can survive that process it sets a firm foundation for a long-lasting relationship.”
