He joked about kissing me… that’s NEVER going to happen: Turning up late, a ‘self-centred’ red flag and a barrier of cushions between them… this week’s VERY awkward Blind Date

Kamila, 25

Single for 18 months, no children.

Dating Past

My most significant relationship was when I moved to Scotland in 2021. I dated someone for almost a year, but it wasn’t the right fit. I joined a dating app in May and have been on four first dates but none got to a second as I wasn’t feeling a ‘vibe’ between us.

Pre-Date Nerves?

No. I’m a naturally effervescent person.

First Impressions?

Basil was almost ten minutes late. Who does that on a blind date? I had to tell myself: ‘It’s fine, Kamila, you won’t be stood up.’ My first thoughts were: ‘Ooh, he’s easy on the eye but not my type.’ I’m not a hugger so we shook hands.

Easy To Talk To?

Yes. Basil is an open book. He admitted he was late because he got waylaid looking for a new jacket… and bought two. He insisted on showing me both.

I’m a very spiritual person and told Basil we were meant to meet and learn from one another. He immediately agreed with me. Whether he just said that because he was attracted to me, who knows?

He asked me about my father but I said I wasn’t prepared to discuss anything about my family on a blind date.

Vital statistics

Kamila, 25

Single for 18 months, no children.

Current role: Studying for a government and politics degree.

Would like to meet: Someone who’s always ready for a challenge.

Embarrassing Moments?

Basil was frustrated there were so many cushions on the bench we were seated on. But I was happy they were there; I’d have liked more between us! Basil wanted to exchange numbers. But I said we should wait until after the date. The truth is, I’ll only go out with a guy if they are deserving of me.

Did Sparks Fly?

No! Basil made a joke about kissing me and that was never going to happen.

See him again?

No, one date was enough. Sorry Basil, I’m just being honest.

What do you think he thought of you?

He told me I was good-looking. On the minus side, I suspect he thought I was materialistic. I was surprised when he said his favourite character in history was Robin Hood. He believes in financial equality for all.

Would your friends like him?

They’d know Basil isn’t my type. He’s a bit too intense for me.

Basil, 29

Single for five years, no children.

Dating Past

I have been single for a while now, which I know looks bad. While I have been on loads of dates, I have never been in love. Every time I see my grandma she asks: ‘When are you getting married?’ At my older brother’s wedding last year, everyone was looking at me as if to say: ‘You’re next.’ I’m feeling the pressure to get a move on.

Pre-Date Nerves?

Yes. I consider myself a bit of a social butterfly, but I can come across as overconfident. Plus, my date sounded almost too perfect.

First Impressions?

I was five minutes late, exploding on the scene with my bags and sunglasses on. I told Kamila she looked good. She was wearing red, a colour most men associate with lust. However, and this will sound rude, I wouldn’t usually go for Kamila. Yet while she’s not my usual type, I could look past that.

Easy To Talk To?

Yes, but we avoided sensitive subjects. She asked me to guess where her accent was from. It turns out she’s originally from Brazil and lived in Italy as a teenager until moving to Scotland five years ago – I didn’t stand a chance.

I consider myself a good listener so I was very present when Kamila went off on tangents.

Embarrassing Moments?

Only that I made Kamila choke with surprise when I called her out for fancying Bradley Cooper.

Did Sparks Fly?

Yes, she said it too. Was there flirting? For sure! We did touch one another’s arms on a few occasions. It might have only been to emphasise a point, but there was skin contact.

See her again?

Yes, I’d make the effort to see her again. The only red flag was that she had a picture of herself as her phone background. Girls who do that tend to be self-centred.

What do you think she thought of you?

Kamila paid me compliments and mentioned that the food and company were good.

Would your family and friends like her?

My mum absolutely would. My dad is very practical and would doubtless ask: ‘Are you going to marry her or not?’

Kamila’s Verdict: 7/10

LIKED? Basil’s classy jacket.

REGRETS? None at all – everything happens for a reason.

COFFEE OR CAB? Cab.

Basil’s Verdict: 6/10

LIKED? I felt comfortable with Kamila.

REGRETS? That she lives in Scotland.

COFFEE OR CAB? Coffee.
