Women in England and Wales are having an average of 1.44 children, far below the required 2.1 rate needed to keep the population level, the Daily Mail can reveal.

Office for National Statistics figures show a clear geographic trend of urban areas boasting the highest fertility rates, while rural areas make up the largest portion of the so-called ‘nappy deserts’.
