Grow your own salad and herbs on a windowsill for pennies with these four easy tips

YOU don’t need to dig deep to create a salad and herb garden on your windowsill.

You can reuse pots from around the home and pick up seeds cheaply — and now is a good time to get started.

Here’s how…

ANNUAL LEAVES: You can enjoy lettuce all year round by growing mini varieties in a sunny spot at home.

Rocket, micro leaves and loose-leaf mini lettuces are good to start in small pots.

For a longer harvest, try choosing the “cut and come again” varieties.

You can also cut the leaves off to eat and more will then grow in their place.

TOP OF THE POTS: You do not need expensive pots or propagators.

Just use washed-out yogurt pots with holes poked in the bottom and put them on a trough or tray.

You can also cut a long section out of the side of a plastic drinks bottle, for a simple compost-filled planter.

Sow lettuce or rocket seeds, for example, in multipurpose compost, around 1cm deep, then cover with a light layer of the compost.

MEET BASIL AND ROSEMARY: These are just two of the herbs you can grow. Rosemary does not need much water but it does need regular pruning to keep it healthy.

Fast-growing basil likes a lot of sun and water, but it will reward you with lush green leaves which are perfect for pesto or pasta dishes.

To make it even easier for you, Wilko has a trio set of basil, chives and parsley for £3.49 — perfect for growing indoors.

CHILD’S PLAY: Kids love growing cress from seeds.

Decorate the outside of an egg shell with a funny face.

Cut the top third off an egg and empty the yolk and white into a cup.

Wash the shell then put a damp cotton-wool ball or two in the bottom and sprinkle with cress seeds.

Keep damp and, in two to three weeks, the cress “hair” will be long enough to snip and eat.
