Grimsby 2 Man Utd 2 (12-11 on pens): Amorim’s flops dumped out in one of biggest cupsets English football has ever seen

MANCHESTER UNITED suffered an embarrassing defeat on penalties to League Two Grimsby.

The Red Devils were booted from the Carabao Cup in the second round after under pressure boss Ruben Amorim couldn’t get his team of superstar flops ticking.

United’s form under Amorim meant that jokes about a potential defeat to Grimsby were not in short supply, but nobody thought the Premier League outfit would actually lose.

Nobody except the 11 men of Grimsby who played with passion and grit from the off to pull off one of the biggest upsets in the history of English football.

Just 22 minutes in Charles Vernam smashed an effort towards the bottom corner, with his effort proving to powerful for the confidence-lacking wrists of Andre Onana.

While Tyrell Warren – a former Man Utd academy star – doubled Grimsby’s lead just eight minuted later.

Again, Onana was to blame. The goalkeeper leapt up to punch away a cross and ended up missing the ball.

His blunder meant there was a scramble to clear, but Warren was the first man to it and managed to pass the ball into an open net.

However, the dream began to crack when Bryan Mbeumo got his first goal in a Man Utd shirt on the 75 minute mark, clawing a goal back for United.

And it all came crashing to an end when Harry Maguire rose up to meet a corner at the back post with just one minute left of the 90, nodding home an equalising goal.

That was until a mammoth 24-penalty shootout ended with a Grimsby win.
