Google Maps users praise ‘best update in years’ – as they call new feature a ‘life saver’

It’s the go-to navigational app for millions of people around the world.

And now Google Maps has released an update that is being praised as its ‘best in years.’

With the update, Google Maps will now tell commuters the best area to board a train for a faster exit.

The new tool was spotted by Reddit user r/london, who described it as the ‘best update to Google Maps in years.’

‘Maps now shows the best area to seat on the train for a faster exit… not that we had all that memorised already anyway,’ they wrote, alongside a screenshot of the tool.

Replying to the original post on Reddit, one user agreed that the feature was a ‘life saver’.

‘I’ve recently been to Tokyo and they do this for all the metro lines. Plus tell you which entrance and exit to use at the stations,’ they wrote.

‘It was a life saver when trying to navigate the busiest stations in the world! Happy this is in London as well now.’

To try the new tool yourself in London, make sure you’re using the latest version of the Google Maps app.

Next, search for directions to your chosen destination, and select Public Transport.

Scroll down to the route, and you should see a new section titled ‘boarding position for fastest exit’, alongside a graphic showing whether you should board the rear, middle, or front.

r/london only posted about the feature yesterday, but their post has already garnered huge attention on Reddit.

Several users pointed out that the feature was already available in Japan.

‘It’s been a feature for maps in Tokyo for a while now, it’s very useful,’ one user replied.

Another added: ‘Finally, this was what I loved about google maps when I was in Japan. Even shows you which exit to use.’

And one wrote: ‘I’ve used this before in Tokyo, genuinely made life so much easier.’

However, not everyone was so happy about its addition in the UK.

‘This knowledge should be earned, not given,’ one user vented.

‘It is what separates the locals from the tourists.’

Another added: ‘Actually more annoying as now others will know the shortest route.’

And one vented: ‘Terrible. It took me years to fine tune my regular trips and now everyone will know.’
