Going, going… gondola! Moment soaking tourists are dragged out of a Venice canal after tipping over their boat while posing for selfies

This is the moment soaking tourists are dragged out of a canal in Venice after tipping over their boat while posing for selfies.

Their gondolier also ended up in the water when the vessel flipped in the Rio dei Greci canal, in the Castello district, on Sunday.

The incident occurred along a very narrow stretch of water that gives little space to move.

Nobody was hurt in the accident, and while the exact cause is not yet confirmed, early reports suggest the gondola tipped over after passengers moved suddenly while taking selfies.

The tourists managed to pull themselves out by grabbing onto window bars and moored boats before making their way to a small bridge nearby with help from bystanders.

A similar accident happened in Venice in November 2023 when a group of tourists ignored a gondolier’s instructions and continued to stand up to take selfies.

The weight shifted to one side of the gondola, and the boat overturned, sending everyone into the water.

In a separate incident, a huge cruise ship broke down off the Italian island of Ponza on Monday.

The MSC World Europa suffered engine trouble about eight nautical miles from Ponza in the Pontine Archipelago, south of Rome.

The Coast Guard said the problem was reported at 7:25am while the ship was sailing from Genoa to Naples with 8,585 people on board, including 6,496 passengers and 2,089 crew.

It is believed the cruise liner had an electrical fault affecting its engines. The situation on board is calm, with good weather and calm seas, and essential services are still running on backup generators.

Two tugboats have already left from Gioia Tauro and Naples to assist the MSC World Europa and tow it safely to Naples.
