Gene Hackman’s priceless movie memorabilia sells for mammoth amount nine months after tragic death

Movie memorabilia and art belonging to the late Gene Hackman have fetched more than $2 million at auction.

The Hollywood star’s estate is selling the belongings nine months after Hackman, 95, and his wife Betsy Arakawa, 63, were found dead at their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home.

Among the artefacts that went under the hammer at Bonhams international auction house were the actor’s Golden Globes, his collection of paintings as well as his own artwork and sculptures by Auguste Rodin.

The three Golden Globe awards Hackman won during his long career each eclipsed the expected asking prices, Bonhams said.

The trophy for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for the 2001 film The Royal Tenenbaums went for more than $50,000.

Bonhams’ Anna Hicks said the items up for sale ‘offer an intimate portrait of Hackman’s private world.’

Another auction will be held on December 4 when the final lots of memorabilia will be put up for sale.
