Fuming Bruno Guimaraes blasts ’embarrassing’ Newcastle and labels team-mates ‘a mess’ after Sunderland loss

BRUNO GUIMARAES slammed “embarrassing” Newcastle and called his team-mates a “mess” in the defeat at Sunderland.

The woeful Mags failed to lay a glove on the Black Cats as Nick Woltemade’s own goal condemned them to derby defeat.

And Newcastle’s Brazilian captain did not hold back after their rivals moved four points clear of them in the table.

He said: “The whole message in the changing room today was do it for the fans and we didn’t.

“It’s so embarrassing for me and frustrating because we know we have a better team than them. It’s clear for me.

“But we didn’t perform like a better team today. It makes me feel angry.

“I have to be very worried about my words because I’m very angry with the performance.”

Guimaraes agreed this was the most painful loss of his career at Newcastle, adding: “Not just as a defeat, more the way we play.

“Disappointed, frustrated, lack of energy, don’t put the things that we are able to do, cross the ball, pass the ball.

“We were like a mess in my point of view. Disappointed, angry. This one is a tough one to accept.

“We should play much better. I don’t want to talk about the opposite team. It’s about us, it’s about the way we play.

“We were not there. No passing, no crossing, nothing. No competing, no showing desire.

“We know how big the game is and we didn’t perform the way we should, so I’m very angry.”

Eddie Howe was also quick to offer his apologies to the Toon Army after such a feeble showing.

The Toon boss, whose side have failed to collect a single point from a losing position in the top-flight this term, said: “That is going to sting for a long time.

“We know our performance was off what we needed it to be, not from a defensive perspective, where I thought we defended pretty well throughout the game, but we weren’t good enough to open them up.

“Criticism comes with every defeat, but of course with this one, it will be louder and stronger just because of the importance of the game.

“We fully acknowledge that. That’s why it hurts so much.

“It’s so disappointing for our supporters, and we’re sorry for the performance, in the sense of the lack of goalmouth action and lack of clinical attacking which we’ve tried to pride ourselves on over recent seasons.”

While it was misery on Tyneside, it was party time for Regis Le Bris and the rest of Wearside.

The triumphant Sunderland boss said: “We will enjoy this result, but I am happy for the players, the club and the fans because they deserve it.

The result puts the Black Cats four points and five places ahead of Eddie Howe’s men in the Premier League table

“I understood what this game meant to the people of the community really quickly – it was probably on the first day when I arrived!

“I am happy for the fans because it was an important game for them, and they were part of the process today.

“It is so enjoyable to feel this energy and support. The players managed the situation properly.”

Sunderland marked the win by posing for a celebratory photo in front of the Roker end – replicating Newcastle’s antics after their 3-0 FA Cup win here in January 2024.

Goalkeeper Robin Roefs said: “It was mentioned before, like in the speech we had.

“Maybe it was a little bit [planned].

” I don’t really know much about it, but we were being told the last time they won here they were making pictures in front of our fans.

“We used this as extra motivation today.”
