The products may contain cereulide, a substance which can cause symptoms similar to food poisoning – nausea and vomiting when consumed.

According to the company there have not yet been any reports of illness associated with the products, it clarified it was recalling them “out of an abundance of caution”.

“The safety and wellbeing of babies is our absolute priority,” the firm said in a statement.

What is cereulide?

Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of the Bacillus cereus bacteria during the growth phase in foods.

It can cause food poisoning symptoms, which can be quick to develop and include vomiting and stomach cramps.

Symptoms, which also may include malaise and diarrhea, usually last between six to 24 hours.

Cereulide is unlikely to be deactivated or destroyed by cooking, using boiling water, or when making the infant milk, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned.
