‘Freak tornado’ sends jumping castle flying through the air as four children are rushed to hospital

Five children have been injured after a jumping castle detached from the ground and was blown over a fence by a ‘freak tornado’.

Emergency services rushed to a home on Kelvin Park Dr in Bradfield, south-western Sydney, about 9.35am on Saturday.

Three nine-year-olds, a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old were assessed before four children were taken to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a stable condition.

SafeWork NSW inspectors are onsite and making enquiries after the incident.

A spokesperson from the jumping castle company said the owners had informed him there was a ‘massive wind’ caused by a ‘freak tornado’.

‘I’m glad the children are OK, that’s a positive thing,’ he told the Daily Telegraph

He added that the generator, which belonged to the owners of the property, was also reportedly ‘ripped away’ by the strong gusts of winds.

It comes after families in Tasmania were rocked when a ‘dust devil’ lifted a jumping castle into the air, killing six primary school children.

Chace Harrison, Jalailah Jayne-Maree Jones, Zane Mellor, Addison Stewart, Jye Sheehan and Peter Dodt died as a result of the incident at Hillcrest Primary School in Devonport in December 2021.

They were enjoying end-of-year celebrations on the Tasmanian school’s oval when a wind gust lifted the castle into the air. Three others were seriously injured.

A judge dismissed a workplace safety charge against the jumping castle operator in June, with one devastated mother lashing out in court.

Georgie Burt, the devastated mother of 12-year-old Zane Mellor, began yelling from inside the public gallery after the verdict was read out.

‘I hope it stays with you forever, what you have done. My child, they will follow you until you are dead,’ she shouted.

‘My son Zane Mellor, I hope it haunts you, I hope you see them every single time they miss a Christmas, miss a birthday it’s because of you.’
