CELEBRATE Britain’s fascinating heritage for free this month.
There’s a packed programme of no-cost events throughout September bringing history to life . . .
FAMILY FUN: Explore England’s rich past with the Heritage Open Days festival, from September 12 to 21.
There’s free fun for all ages, from joining a family-friendly mock trial in the Victorian court at Nottingham’s National Justice Museum to a silent disco inside Newport Minster on the Isle of Wight.
Many of the events are accessible to all.
FREE FOR ALL: All of the 6,000 events are free, including some that usually charge admission.
For example, a family visiting Corfe Castle, Dorset, on September 20-21, can save up to £35 on the usual entry.
Run by the National Trust, supported by People’s Postcode Lottery, Heritage Open Days also give access to many places not usually seen by the public, such as the treasures of the Cadbury archives in Bourneville, Birmingham.
You need to book in advance for some events. Find out more at heritageopendays.org.uk.
WALKS, TALKS AND TOURS: The other UK nations are holding their own history celebrations this month — all with free tours and activities.
Scotland’s Doors Open Days festival has nearly 1,000 events.
The programme started this weekend and continues throughout September. See doorsopendays.org.uk for all the details.
In Wales, you can discover more than 200 hidden gems and historic sites through the nation’s Open Doors Days. See cadw.gov.wales.
In Northern Ireland, look out for historic places taking part in European Heritage Open Days. See discovernorthernireland.com.
CAPITAL EXPERIENCE: In London, the Open House Festival runs from September 13 to 21, giving you the chance to explore the capital’s most extraordinary places, including many which are normally closed to the public.
It’s free, but you need to book for some venues at programme.openhouse.org.uk.
