Former RAF corporal, 96, becomes oldest contestant ever to appear on Countdown

A former RAF corporal aged 96 who left school when he was 14 has become the oldest contestant to appear on Channel 4 gameshow Countdown.

Donald Elsom, who says he has been a dedicated viewer of the brain-teasing letters and numbers show for decades, has already recorded the episode, which is due to be broadcast this afternoon.

The pensioner from Stanley, County Durham, who had a varied career in the Royal Air Force as well as being a police dog handler, butcher and school caretaker, did not reveal how he fared during his appearance.

However, Channel 4 described him as bringing warmth, wit and wisdom to the long-running show, along with a sharp mind.

Mr Elsom, originally from Willingham in Cambridgeshire, said: ‘I enjoyed everything about the day.
