Aitor Ruibal levelled the tie in just the 8th minute of the match and just before half-time Betis were ahead through Amrabat.

The former Manchester United star found the net from 35 yards with a brilliant curling effort.

Amrabat’s shot deceived Alban Lafont who was left wrong-footed and could only see the ball fly past him.

The goal came in controversial circumstances as Panathinaikos defender Davide Calabria appeared to be fouled by Abde Ezzalzouli.

That was not the only bizarre moment in the lead-up to the goal as Ezzalzouli received the ball, believing he was offside.

The winger lumped the ball up in the air in frustration but play continued instead of the flag being raised.

Renato Sanches miscontrolled for the visitors straight to Amrabat, who took his chance to score.

Fans were left baffled by the sequence of events as they reacted on social media.

Amrabat, 29, was not the only former United star to get on the scoresheet in the game.

After Cucho Hernández made it 3-0, it was the turn of Antony to step up and find the target.

The Brazilian slotted home before celebrating with a tweed flat cap.

Betis held out to win 4-1 on aggregate and book their spot in the quarter-finals.

Manuel Pellegrini‘s team will now face Portuguese side Braga for a spot in the semi-final.
