Former Liverpool star, 29, with ‘more potential than Raheem Sterling’ joins eighth tier club on free transfer

FORMER Liverpool star Jordon Ibe has made a transfer to the eighth tier of English football.

The former star has bounced around non-league divisions since returning from a spell in Turkey in 2023.

Sittingbourne seemed enamoured with the free transfer when announcing his signature in a glowing club statement.

The statement read: “We’re proud to announce that Sittingbourne FC has been trusted with supporting Jordon on his journey to rediscover the joy of football.

“Our goal is simple: to see Jordon perform at his best. Nothing would make us happier than to see him excel over the coming months and return to full-time football – a success that would reflect both his hard work and the club’s commitment to development.

Ibe began his career with the academies of Charlton Athletic and Wycombe Wanderers.

The winger was snagged in 2012 by Liverpool at the age of 16, and was touted to become a first-team star by many at the time.

Club icon John Aldridge sensationally claimed at the time that he could even surpass star wide man Raheem Sterling.

He said in 2015: “Raheem is obviously a hugely talented player but Liverpool have a top replacement in Jordon Ibe.

“I’ve been watching Jordan play since he was 15. He’s a terrific player and has bags of potential.

“In fact I think he’s got as much if not more potential than Raheem and will go on to be a better player.”

But things would not go to plan for the young star, who made 58 appearances across four years with the club.

He would be sold to Bournemouth the summer following Aldridge’s comments, for a record £15million fee.

But after 92 appearances on the south coast between then and 2020, Ibe failed to impress, and left the Premier League to join Derby County.

Now he has found himself at a new chapter after struggling to hold down a role with a number of non-league sides, despite still being in what should have been his prime playing years.

Sittingbourne’s statement continued: “We’re truly humbled to have a player of Jordon’s calibre – a former Premier League talent – join Sittingbourne FC.

“In his short time here, Jordon has already shown that his quality and ability remain as strong as ever.

“It’s now up to all of us to embrace that and make the most of this exciting chapter, for both Jordon and the club.”
