KITCHEN appliances are some of the most important and frequently used in the home, and are also some of the longest lasting.
However, they don’t last forever, and for many homeowners one of the most popular items of recent years may be reaching its end as winter and the holiday season arrive.
Air fryers and other kitchen appliances used daily can have some obvious signs they need to be replaced according to appliance expert David Foulstone at Morphy Richards.
In fact, your air fryer itself may already need replacing depending on when exactly it was purchased.
Foulstone explains that these appliances only last three to five years, meaning those homeowners who bought one when their popularity swelled during the Covid-19 lockdown may already need to get a new one.
Additional signs that your air fryer needs replacing include it not heating food correctly, or if you notice any unusual smells, especially those like rubber or metal burning which could indicate an electrical issue.
Kettles are also an incredibly popular home appliance, and last a similar span of time with an average of roughly four and a half years.
They too have telltale signs of needing replacement, such as when cracks form in the plastic that could cause leaks and resultantly create electrical issues.
Limescale and rust on the metal sections of a kettle are also obvious signs of needing replacement, as they can foul the water’s taste and be dangerous to ingest.
Toaster ovens last a little bit longer, being recommended for replacement every six years. Signs it needs replacing include the toasting lever not locking into a down or up position, uneven cooking, or broken dials which no longer function as intended.
Microwaves, one of the most frequently used appliances in the kitchen, can last up to nine years on average, but only if properly cleaned and maintained during that time.
Likewise, an odd smell such as burning plastic or smoke during use indicates a problem that necessitates replacing the appliance.
Other signs to watch out for include a general poor cook quality without these smells, sporadic electrical failures/issues, and noticeable physical damage that could affect cooking quality.
Coffeemakers top the charts in how long they last, being recommended for replacement once every 10 years. However, especially frequent or repeated use could result in some signs of replacement arriving before this date.
Thankfully, they have some of the most obvious signs, with the most apparent being a change in the coffee’s quality. If it tastes burnt or weak, there’s likely an issue in the brewing process that mandates replacing the machine.
It’s also recommended that owners regularly clean the limescale off of their machines, as this can highlight exactly when a coffee machine is too far gone and needs to be replaced.
