KEEPING up with the latest fashion trends can be overwhelming – and sometimes you end up rocking the same outfit.
Whether that’s joggers or a pair of jeans with a sweatshirt, there is nothing wrong with sporting your go-to look – and you should definitely not feel pressured to keep up with what’s trending on the high street.

But sometimes, those staple pieces are outdated and can make the wardrobe feel a bit dull and hide your personality.
Luckily, if your favourite ensemble consists of three popular staples – leggings, comfy trainers and a white T-shirt – there are easy swaps to upgrade the look.
One proud millennial, Charlotte, took to TikTok to reveal how to instantly elevate the so-called ”millennial uniform” – and it takes just seconds.
An easy switch, she demonstrated in the informative video, is ditching the figure-hugging T-shirt with a more baggy version.
According to Charlotte, who posts under the username @charlottesworld1, you can find boxy T-shirts at Next – and not only are they ”super comfortable” but ”the fabric is super thick”.
”It just gives that oversized look, which is very flattering. It’s something you need to get used if you’re used wearing that sort of millennial, very tight-fitting clothing.
”But I promise you – once you’ve given it a go, you won’t be looking back,” the TikToker told her followers.
While Charlotte did keep the leggings, she overhauled the bottom section of the outfit by getting rid of the trendy New Balance trainers and covering her ankles with socks.
Ankle socks used to be all the rage back in the day – but in 2025, ”it is okay for people to see your socks”, Charlotte chuckled.
”I put on some crew socks and Adidas Spezials as well. They’re just really cute.
”You can wear other trainers or you can wear the original trainers I had on as well – they’re really lovely. But it’s just about switching up a little bit.”
Another easy addition is playing around with jewellery, such as earrings, a necklace and even a watch that will instantly upgrade the otherwise dull ensemble.
”It just makes it look a little bit more interesting.”
In her clip, Charlotte also did ”a controversial thing” by swapping the side parting for a more flattering middle parting.
How to look chic on a budget
Fashion stylist Gemma Rose Breger, and beauty journalist Samantha Silver revealed how you can make your outfits elevated without spending hundreds of pounds.
- Don’t ever spend on designer denim: River Island ”always has such a great selection of fashion-forward jeans that follow the current trends”. The high street retailer offers a great range of sizes to fit UK 6 – UK 18, and three leg lengths – and prices start from an affordable £25.
- There are no rules for jewels: ”Pick up something at a car boot sale, or charity shop, scroll on Vinted & eBay, snap up something from the clothing section in your local supermarket when doing the food shop or check out high street clothing stores.”
- Don’t forget the pre-loved sites: With a rising number of second-hand sites, such as Vinted and Depop, there’s no excuse for not buying – or selling – pre-loved garments. Gemma, for instance, has managed to get her hands on chic Chanel sunnies for a mere £17.
”That’s probably the most controversial thing – apart from the socks – when I started to update my own wardrobe.
”And you know what, I absolutely love it and I can’t wear a side parting anymore.”
The fifth and final change was throwing on an oversized denim jacket.
”We have the same outfit – almost as before but with a few subtle changes that just make me feel a little bit more put-together, a little less frumpy and a little bit more up-to-date.”
Social media users react
Posted just one day ago, the clip has racked up more than 19k views, with fellow social media users flocking to comments to share their thoughts.
”I have a side parting when my hairs down, middle parting when it’s up….. not giving up on it just yet,” chuckled one viewer.
”This made me smile so much. The socks how dare people see them!” another joked.
”5 years ago I gave up the side parting for a middle one. Boxy tee’s are definitely my new favourite,” a third chimed in.
