SHEET GHOST: Dig out a spare white sheet — the older and more ragged, the better.

Cut two eye holes, drape it over your head and you’re instantly a classic spectre.

For extra creepiness, drag it through some mud in the garden and add fake blood stains using ketchup or red food colouring.

BIN BAG WITCH: Grab a black bin bag and cut out holes for your head and arms.

SUN SAVERS

Three savvy ways to save big before Christmas with carefully timed purchases

Use an old scarf or dressing gown cord to tie around it as a belt.

Make a witch’s hat from black card rolled into a cone.

Some green face paint completes the look.

Add plastic spiders, £1 per pack, Poundland, to up the scare factor.

ROTTING ZOMBIE: This one’s dead easy. Rip up some old clothes and stain them with watered-down brown paint or even cold tea or coffee.

Use face paint to create a spookily pale complexion, with dark shadows around the eyes.

Add splashes of fake blood, too — either with face point or by mixing red food colouring with golden syrup.

Back-brush your hair and you’re good to go.

DEMONIC PUMPKIN: Wear all orange and stuff your T-shirt with scrunched-up newspaper to get a rounded outline.

Cut out sinister black cardboard shapes for a terrifying face and pin them to your well-padded top.

Add fake blood dripping from the eyes and mouth. A green beanie hat is a perfect stalk.

SKELETON CREW: Dig out black leggings and a long-sleeved top.

Use a white chalk marker or a tube of cheap white face paint to draw bones onto the fabric.

Paint your face like a skull with dark, hollow eyes.

Up the ante by using glow-in-the-dark paint (£3.99, Amazon.co.uk) for a bone-chilling look.
