TEMPERATURES are plunging across the UK, with some spots down to -7C and Met Office snow and ice warnings in force.
And of course, with the bitterly cold weather also comes a problem many motorists face – as they wake up to find their cars iced over before the morning school run or commute, forcing drivers to scrape them clear.
But there are a handful of quick, low-cost, fuel-free ways to de-ice your motor or even prevent ice from forming.
Alcohol spray
By mixing two parts rubbing alcohol or methylated spirits with one part water in a spray bottle, you can then mist the glass of your motor, as the alcohol has a lowered freezing point – which helps to melt ice fast.
Then, all you need to do is wipe the drips off.
Warm-water bag
You can fill a sealable plastic bag with warm (not hot) tap water and simply glide it over the windscreen.
The gentle heat melts ice without soaking the glass or risking thermal shock – which is known to shatter glass.
Never use boiling water.
Budget 3‑in‑1 scraper
A simple plastic scraper with a rubber squeegee and foam wiper costs about £1 to £2 from places like Halfords or Lidl.
Crack the ice, sweep away meltwater, then dry the glass to help prevent re‑freezing.
Overnight windscreen cover
Fit a weighted or clipped cover before bed to stop frost forming in the first place.
Make sure it’s dry; a blanket or old curtain can even do the job.
Kitchen staples
There’s plenty of handy items in your kitchen cupboards that can work wonders.
The night before, lightly rub a sliced potato or onion over the screen, or spritz a little lemon juice or white vinegar.
These create a thin film that can reduce frost build-up.
Make sure you use sparingly though and avoid paintwork and rubber, and wipe residue off in the morning.
What to avoid
Boiling water is a big no-no, as the sudden heat can crack or shatter cold glass.
Metal scrapers should also be avoided, as they can scratch the windscreen.
And it’s important to avoid running your wipers on ice, as it can tear the blades.
Remember, before setting off, you must clear the entire windscreen and all windows as driving with limited visibility is illegal and unsafe.
