Here’s your emergency guide to last-minute mini-presents for the family . . .

SWEET TREATS: Head to Poundland and look out for the multi-packs, which can be divided up between stockings for everyone.

Swizzels Curious Chews, £1, are all individually wrapped so a handful can go into each stocking. Plus, pick up a pack of four Dairy Milk Little Bars and pop one in each.

BEST FOOT FORWARD: A festive pair of socks is a stocking staple and they can be worn when lounging around on Christmas Day.

Three savvy ways to save big before Christmas with carefully timed purchases

Cosy bow-themed or tartan-inspired bed socks at Primark are £3.50 for a pack of two. Or a set of five ribbed cotton-rich socks — in an array of cool colours — is £5 at M&S. You can give a pair of socks to everyone.

SPEEDY SOAKER: Pick up a 1kg bag of Epsom bath salts at Superdrug, reduced to £2.79 from £3.49.

Then rescue some glass jars from the recycling and give them a wash or put them in the dishwasher, removing the label in full.

Scoop the salt into individual jars, put the lids on, add festive ribbon or wrapping paper, then pop them into your stockings. A small jar should be enough for a nice long soak on Boxing Day.

TOP CHOC: Homemade chocolate bark is a great little snack that can bulk out your stocking.

In a pan, melt a few bars of Aldi cooking chocolate, £1.29 each, pour into a tray lined with baking paper and sprinkle over crushed nuts or even some cereal.

Leave to set in the fridge, then break into pieces and wrap in baking paper, tying up the little packages with ribbon. It’s luxe choc for less.

GIFT OF LOVE: A sweet, thoughtful gesture for a partner’s stocking is to write personal gift vouchers.

These can range from offering a massage, to cooking their favourite meal on a date night.
