FIFA have allowed Uruguay to sport four stars above their badge ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
That’s despite the fact the South American nation has only won the competition TWICE.

The decision comes after Uruguay made a formal request to football’s world governing body.
Uruguay hosted and won the first World Cup in 1930 and followed it up by upsetting hosts Brazil in 1950.
That should entitle them to two stars above their crest at this summer’s tournament.
But they will instead wear two more — commemorating their Olympic golds in 1924 and 1928.
While football in the Olympics is no longer run by Fifa, it was recognised by the organisation as the world championships of the sport before the first World Cup in 1930.
As a result of this, Uruguay were allowed to keep their stars.
After winning back to back golds in football — Uruguay went on to win the inaugural Fifa World Cup in 1930.
They hosted the first edition of football’s biggest tournament and defeated Argentina in the final at Estadio Centenario — which is still their national stadium.

The South Americans won it for the second time in 1950 — beating hosts Brazil in the final group game to lift the trophy.
This tournament took place after the previous two were postponed due to the Second World War.
Historically, Fifa have been less forgiving when it comes to stars.
Egypt requested 7 stars above their badge for the 2018 World Cup – representing their record amount of Afcon titles.
However Fifa denied the request — as they do not govern the African competition.
But Uruguay did not suffer the same fate and Marcelo Bielsa’s team will have the four stars on their shirts in North American this June and July.
The kit, which was officially released on March 21 features a white polo collar alongside Urguay’s classic sky blue.
