Family-owned department store chain set to close two sites and three restaurants with job losses

A FAMILY-OWNED department store is shutting two branches and three restaurants leading to 24 job losses.

The chain said they had to reach “an amenable solution” after one of their stores ended up with six-figure deficits.

Trago will close its sites in Liskeard and Newton Abbot but the Falmouth shop will stay open despite weeks of speculation.

The board deemed the Trago Leisure Park at Newton Abbot no longer financially viable and it will cease trading on December 31.

Alongside the leisure park, the Staple Hill restaurant will close its doors at the Newton Abbott store.

The steam railway will remain open while Trago “actively explores sustainable options to enable it to continue operating in the future.”

At the Newton Abbot site alone there will be 12 members of staff facing redundancy.

Seven members of staff are from the restaurant and five from the leisure park.

In Liskeard, two more staff will lose their job after the restaurant closes.

The Keg and Kettle will close next week, on December 22.

A further 10 job cuts at Falmouth are expected as the store ran into a six-figure deficit.

The chain will close two departments after a consultation with staff.

Targo said the redundancies come after “weak footfall in the high street”.

“We have found a formula which we hope will continue to serve the local community whilst retaining the most jobs possible,” it added.

In September, Trago Mills chairman Bruce Robertson said Trago’s management were looking to find a solution to the debt.

In a statement Trago said its board would board would “continue to explore all options to achieve a return on profitability”.

It added: “Our thanks go out to the many messages of support and compassion over the past month.

“Our clear message and plea to an (at least in part) adoring public is…if you want a Trago presence in Falmouth, please use us!”

A spokesperson for the company told ITV, increases in employer’s national insurance, the living wage and energy costs all made the cuts necessary.

Trago Mills operates four stores across Devon, Cornwall and Wales: Falmouth and Liskeard in Cornwall, Newton Abbot in Devon and Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.
