Experts warn travellers risk being turned away at the airport as passport picture makeup is trending on TikTok

Experts have warned travellers risk being turned away at the airport over their  passport picture makeup which is trending on TikTok.

The viral passport photo makeup hack is seeing creators providing tips on how to achieve an ‘aesthetic’ passport snap which includes, contouring, shaping brows, drawing on fake freckles and plumping lips.

However Rhysa Phommachanh, hair and skincare expert at Landys Chemist, shared her concerns about the trend because of the security implications it may cause at ePassport gates and border control.

Influencer Georgia Barratt previously shared her passport snap makeup look, which gained over 1.7 million views on her TikTok @georgia.barratt

In the clip, which has since been recreated by many other creators, Georgia admitted  to  wanting her face ‘as lifted as possible.’

She said: ‘For conture I want OTT to try and carve out my face, my forehead as usual and carve out my cheekbones.

‘Literally this look is all about the conture, chin next, a line here and line here and drag it back, this points off your chin. Then we lift the eye, follow the natural couture.’

Georgia said to ‘really snatch the face’ she added concealer below her cheekbones and below the contour line to give her cheekbones a lift.

She added a ‘fox eye look’ with a winged eyeliner to ‘elongate the eye’ and she finished off her look with overlining her lips to make them look fuller.

Nearly 10,000 creatures across the UK and US copied Georgia’s glam passport makeup routine following her video with the #passportmakeup trending.

However Rhysa warned that your passport picture should ‘truly represent you’ and people should avoid exaggerating their features for their passport snap.

Speaking to FEMAIL, she said: ‘While a flattering passport photo can be a great confidence booster, it’s important to remember that your passport photo is supposed to truly represent you.

‘Travellers may already look different before boarding a plane (due to clothing and makeup choices), so it is important to ensure that you are not skewing your likeness further.’

Why is the TikTok passport makeup trend risky?

Rhysa explained: ‘There are a lot of steps in the viral tutorial, and the creator of the trend has also admitted that certain elements are intentionally over the top, specifically contour, concealer and overlined lips.

‘With the recent adoption of ePassport gates, an exaggerated profile photo can cause issues at security.’

What make-up enhancements are suitable for your passport picture?

She added: ‘Subtle makeup is a great compromise – before taking your passport photo, try a light foundation or BB cream to even out your complexion and a light dab of concealer to tackle any under-eye bags or blemishes.

‘Defining your brows can help to frame your face, along with some neutral eyeshadow and a light coat of mascara.’

What can you do to naturally enhance your skin for travel?

Rhysa added: ‘Poor or short sleep can affect your face before travelling overnight or in the early hours, if you find that you want to achieve a more awake appearance, there are a few skincare tasks you can carry out to reduce signs of tiredness before arriving at the airport.

‘Prepping your skin before your flight can also ensure that you look fresh-faced and hydrated after landing in your destination country!

‘Moisturising before entering the dry environment of the plane will also prevent your skin barrier from becoming compromised and dehydrated, which can result in breakouts and more prominent fine lines and wrinkles.

‘Physical dehydration can also cause puffiness, so make sure to drink plenty of water during your flight and ensure you move around regularly to boost circulation and prevent fluid buildup.’
