‘EXCITING progress’ is being made at a beloved British horse racing venue – that’s ‘ready to welcome punters’ once again.
Towcester racecourse in Northampton sadly shut in 2019 after racking up debts of more than £1.3million.
The site of AP McCoy’s 4,000th winner and fondly known as the ‘home of the slow horse’ due to its layout, Towcester, where racing was first held in 1876, was a firm favourite of punters.
In recent years they have kept the fans flowing by hosting the dogs – including the English Greyhound Derby.
And many years ago they even had a horse vs hound match-up that was sponsored by William Hill.
But in September plans were announced for the track to stage schooling days for thoroughbreds.
This would see novice horses jump hurdles and fences with a view to racing over them in the future.
And, while nothing has been confirmed, it was hoped that development could lead to point-to-point races being held there too.
As for actual racing under rules, boss Richard Thomas said: “Towcester doesn’t have any fixtures and that would be a difficult route to undertake.
“However, you could never rule that option out.

“There’s an absolute need to create a professional schooling centre and this is where we’ll concentrate in the first instance.”
However, some new photos showing the famous old straight and distinctive grandstand have got punters talking again.
Posted to Towcester’s official page were three snaps with the following message: “Exciting progress is happening here at Towcester Racecourse!
“Our team has been hard at work maintaining and improving the grounds to ensure the venue and surroundings are in top condition — ready to welcome racegoers and event guests alike.
“Every detail matters, from the track to the views — and we’re committed to keeping Towcester looking its best for every visit, every race, and every celebration.”
One former racegoer who spotted them online wrote in response: “The horse racing was a great event that we always went to, please bring it back.”
While another said: “Yes! Bring back horse racing miss it so much.”
And a third posted: “Really hope racing returns – a great track.”
