Ex-Premier League defender, 39, joins ninth different club of his career just in time for FA Cup first round tie

FORMER top-flight regular Adrian Mariappa has popped up at seventh-tier St Albans City.

The veteran, 39, had been without a full-time club since leaving Wealdstone at the end of last season.

And he’s been snapped up by the Saints just in time for an enticing FA Cup first-round clash against one of his former sides – Burton Albion.

St Albans’ director of football, Harry Wheeler, told the club website: “Adrian will bring a great deal to this squad, both on and off the field.

“Since pre-season, Adrian and I have been in regular contact with the goal that, at some point, he would join the group.

“Despite receiving several offers from clubs in higher divisions, the timing now feels perfect for both Adrian and the current and future needs of the squad.”

Mariappa enjoyed a summer jaunt to Singapore, where he played in the Soccer 7s Series for Pasha Luxury FC.

Since returning, he has been staying sharp in training with former club Watford.

The defender has also taken on the role as assistant manager to the Hornets’ under-21 side, which he will balance with his playing duties in the Isthmian League Premier Division.

Mariappa made just shy of 350 appearances across two spells with Watford – the second of which ending in 2020.

And he also banked Premier League experience with Reading and Crystal Palace.

St Albans City is the centre-half’s ninth club, having previously turned out for the likes of Bristol City, Salford City and Australian side Macarthur FC.

The Saints reached the FA Cup first-round proper courtesy of wins over Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, Hitchin Town, Woodford Town and Banbury United in qualifying.

And the reward is a trip to the 7,000-capacity Pirelli Stadium on Saturday.
