Etiquette expert reveals when it is acceptable to take off your shoes on a plane

Flights can be uncomfortable.

And for some people, the thought of keeping their shoes on for an entire flight is unbearable.

But is it ever really acceptable to take your shoes off on a plane?

An etiquette expert has now revealed that there is one occasion when it’s okay to ditch your shoes.

Speaking to the New Zealand Herald Jodi R.R Smith, an etiquette expert, said passengers can remove their shoes on a flight if it’s longer than four hours.

However, there is one caveat to that advice.

She warned it’s only okay to remove your shoes if your ‘feet have zero odour’.

And another expert said that there are a set of passengers who definitely can’t remove their shoes even if they’re on a long-haul flight.

Rosalinda Oropeza Randall, an etiquette expert, warned: ‘If you are seated in the emergency exit row, your shoes should always be on.

‘You have elected to take on the responsibility of calmly and expeditiously being ready to assist.

‘There’s no time for a shoe search, untying the shoelace knot and putting them on.’

And there is another reason why it might not be the best idea to remove your shoes on a plane.

Flight attendants have taken to social media to warn passengers that the floor isn’t always that clean.

One woman Danielle took to TikTok to warn travellers to avoid stepping on the plane’s bathroom floor without their shoes on.

She said: ‘It may look like water on the floor but trust me guys, it’s really not. I am sure you can guess what it is.’
